Almost one whole month ago, New York City real estate went completely bonkers: A mystery buyer plunked down $100.5 million for a penthouse at One57, destroying the previous record sale price of $88 million for a Central Park West penthouse just a couple of years before.
Well, that was then. Today the city’s penthouse arms race is approaching DEFCON 1, with a penthouse on Madison Avenue slated to hit the market for a stratospheric $150 million. It’s enough to make mere multimillion-dollar penthouses seem inadequate by comparison, the luxury equivalent of a sixth-floor walk-up tenement in an unfashionable corner of the Lower East Side.
